5 Surefire Moves to Succeed in Social Media: Gangnam Style
His music video has taken the internet by storm, and with over 115,000,000 views on YouTube, he’s gone way past Justin Bieber. But while we all admit that he’s not as handsome as JBiebs, it was his crazy dance moves swept us off our feet. And no, Carly Rae Jepsen, he won’t be calling you-so move over.
Who am I talking about here? Korean rapper-and now YouTube sensation, Psy.
The man behind the surprise hit of 2012, “Oppa Gangnam Style,” Psy offers more than a funky fashion sense and a sling of dance steps. From the way this phenomenon took place, PSY also has disclosed a few surefire ways on how you can succeed in social media.
Gangnam Style Tip #1: Keep Posts Sweet and Funny
If we’re going to translate the title of his song alone, “Oppa Gangnam Style” literally means “Your Boyfriend’s does it Posh Style”. “Oppa” refers to an older guy actually, and while it pertains to an older brother, it may also refer to a boyfriend or husband. “Gangnam” meanwhile is a district in Seoul where the rich and affluent come from, something like SoHo in New York. With that said you can expect that the song is all about a guy with a rich kind of style.
So yes, when creating social media content, you don’t have to be all so serious. In fact, by keeping things light and easygoing, the more your audience can relate. Adding humor also gets them engaged-and the more reason they’d respond to your posts.
Gangnam Style Tip #2: Promote Your Brand Persona
If there’s anything you have to showcase on social media, that would be your brand’s true essence. You don’t have to try to be like your bigger competitors-you’re you. Just like Psy-he’s cannot stand against more handsome Korean artists, such as Rain, or the boy band BigBang-or even Justin Bieber. But being a naturally funny guy-just see how he whips his imaginary lasso and his utterly ridiculous dance moves-those are the things that made him sell. And it’s all because that’s his personality; the case would have been different had he tried to croon ala Josh Groban!
Gangnam Style Tip #3: Do What You Do Best
Let’s face it-those stuff that go viral are the lucky ones (LOL). But the thing is, going viral isn’t an everyday event. It would actually take some time before another KPop star would conquer the internet, and mind you, before becoming a viral sensation, PSY has already been in the Korean music scene for more than 12 years already. Just see long it took for him to gain global recognition.
And yeah, did I say that this song is part of his 6th studio album?
Gangnam Style Tip #4: Share It!
You can’t just stay in one social network-you have to be everywhere. Well, since Psy is a KPop artist, he blasted his music video to the Korean audience first, as they’re the most accessible. But because they found his video really entertaining, they couldn’t help but spread it in more global networks.
As you can see, his video was first launched on YouTube back in July, but it was only last August when it started to go viral. So yes, if you have content to publish, share it everywhere.
Gangnam Style Tip #5: Leverage on Influencers
Finally, if you want to go viral, you have to hook up with your brand’s influencers.
If you happen to be a fan of KPop, for sure you have recognized some familiar faces in the “Oppa Gangnam Style” video. There’s Hyuna, a member of the girl group 4minute, who was Psy’s love interest, and BigBang members Seungri and Daesung acting as old men playing chess in the background. Of course, with their participation in the video, PSY has gained more following thanks to their fans.
Meanwhile, during her Manila concert, artist Nelly Furtado sang the song and did some of Psy’s dance moves, much to the audience’s surprise.
So there you have it-if you want to pimp up your social media campaign, you might as well do it-Gangnam Style!
